Duplex Stainless Steels (including standard grades like Alloy 2205 / UNS S32205 / S31803, lean duplex alloys like Alloy 2201 / S32201 and Alloy 2304 / S32304, and early-generation alloys such as AISI 329 / S32900) possess a distinctive two-phase metallurgical microstructure with approximately equal volume fractions of austenite (FCC) and ferrite (BCC). This unique dual-phase architecture produces an alloy system that combines the high tensile yield strength and chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC) immunity of ferritic stainless steels with the superior impact toughness, ductility, and general pitting resistance of austenitic grades. Characterized by high chromium (21%–28%), balanced nickel (1.5%–8%), and substantial molybdenum and nitrogen additions, Duplex Stainless Steels offer Pitting Resistance Equivalent Numbers (PREN) typically exceeding 32 to 36. Delivering roughly double the design yield strength of standard austenitic 304 and 316L grades, Duplex Stainless Steel bolts, heavy hex studs, nuts, threaded rods, and engineered fasteners enable significant weight savings and exceptional longevity across offshore oil & gas production platforms, subsea manifolds, seawater desalination reverse-osmosis systems, marine propeller shafting, pulp and paper digesters, chemical processing autoclaves, and petrochemical heat exchangers.
