Martensitic Stainless Steels, encompassing the 400 and 500 series (including AISI 403, 410, 414, 416, 420, 422, 431, 440A/B/C, and 501–504), are straight-chromium alloys characterized by a Body-Centered Tetragonal (BCT) crystalline structure formed through thermal austenitizing and rapid quenching. Unlike austenitic and ferritic grades, martensitic stainless steels are uniquely heat-treatable to achieve exceptionally high tensile strengths (up to 2000 MPa), superior hardness (up to 60 HRC), outstanding edge retention, and heavy wear resistance. Fully magnetic in all conditions, they provide moderate corrosion protection against mild atmospheric, steam, fresh water, and petrochemical media, along with excellent resistance to high-temperature erosion and creep.
